With concerns rising over the health of the U.S. labor market, the Heldrich Center is releasing Bouncing Back: Nine Lessons in Resilience and Reemployment, a research brief that offers advice from long-term unemployed workers on coping and getting back to work. These helpful insights are from individuals who were enrolled in the Heldrich Center’s innovative New Start Career Network (NSCN), a privately funded program offering free online information and career coaching from hundreds of volunteer coaches to more than 6,000 job seekers.

“It is inspiring to hear from workers who lost jobs, struggled, yet eventually were able to return to work. This brief highlights important lessons as the number of long-term unemployed workers is predicted to rise over the coming months,” said Carl Van Horn, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Heldrich Center.

Also available is a comprehensive summary research report on the center’s six-year-long NSCN project, Helping Older, Long-term Unemployed Job Seekers: A Report on the Heldrich Center’s New Start Career Network. It highlights the impacts of the center’s program that offered New Jersey job seekers free web-based tools, individual and small group coaching from trained volunteers, employer engagement, and connections to resources provided by a wide array of private and nonprofit organizations.

“These success stories will help other long-term unemployed older workers find hope and learn effective strategies. They offer important lessons to others in the same predicament,” said Maria Heidkamp, Founding Director of NSCN and Director of Program Development at the Heldrich Center.

The New Start Career Network was supported by donations from the Philip and Tammy Murphy Family Foundation, New Jersey Resources, the Fund for New Jersey, the Corporation for National and Community Service/New Jersey Volunteer Generation Fund, Amazon, and other New Jersey-based companies.

In 2020, the immense upheaval and turmoil in the labor market prompted the Heldrich Center to rethink what constituted job seeker support and how virtual interaction could foster a sense of community. With these ideas in mind, researchers created the New Jersey Career Network Job Seeker Community, an online home for New Jersey job seekers looking for help and support along their unemployment journey. Increased job loss, accompanying social isolation, the expansion of virtual methods of communication, and general economic turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic put significant strain on job seekers and the systems designed to help them get back to work. Job search burnout is increasing across a variety of professions and can hinder reemployment. Having fewer financial, social, and psychological resources can lead to job search fatigue, resulting in poorer long-term outcomes. In particular, long-term unemployment can lead to high levels of fatigue. Fortunately, there are ways that burnout can be combated, including mindfulness practices.

Companies often use wellness challenges to keep their workforce productive and engaged. Wellness challenges are short-term behavioral change contests, interventions, and team activities designed to improve employee health and morale by encouraging healthy habits. Recognizing that unemployed people don’t have access to these kinds of services that are critical to both the job search and employability, a new Medium blog post by Savannah Barnett and Stephanie D’Angelo explores using that same model for job seekers as part of workforce programming. The post examines a “Restoring Aliveness Challenge” that was organized for the New Jersey Job Seeker Community as well as tips for implementing wellness changes in workforce programming.

Job search is often a stressful and overwhelming process for job seekers. As the job search goes on, many job seekers may find themselves burnt out after submitting hundreds of applications, especially if there has been little to no response or reward. The constant rejection that comes with the job search can also contribute to this feeling of burnout, particularly if one has been looking for a position for months or even years.

Burnout can often lead to inaction, which in turn can have the effect of prolonging the job search. The emotional and physical symptoms of burnout can act as major impediments to the job search. In the long term, burnout can cause damaging effects on the mind and body, including but not limited to anxiety disorders, susceptibility to illness, and chronic fatigue. Because physical and emotional burnout can manifest differently depending on the person, it is important to develop self-awareness of symptoms and triggers in order to combat burnout.

In a new Medium blog post, Amanda Bombino and Liana Volpe discuss burnout from the job search, including its causes and symptoms. They also offer five practical strategies so that job seekers, as well as workforce professionals, can understand and cope with the emotional and physical toll of burnout.

Today, it is often the case that software systems will review an applicant’s résumé before a recruiter or hiring manager does. Applicant tracking systems have long been a fixture in the hiring landscape, but employers are now adding more steps in the hiring process, most notably, behavioral assessments embedded in online applications.
