Disability Employment

The Heldrich Center was under contract with Somerset County in central New Jersey to conduct an independent evaluation of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey's (MHANJ) model for assisting people with mental illnesses to become employed. MHANJ implemented supported employment supplemented by a support network of peer counselors who work with people with serious and persistent mental illness to help them return to work.

The Heldrich Center reviewed current practices on serving older workers at community colleges to synthesize what is known about these practices and make recommendations for future practices to better address the particular issues facing older workers at community colleges. This study includes in-depth examinations of initiatives and programs of particular relevance to older workers at community colleges: those that serve dislocated workers and those that serve students with disabilities.

From 2009 to 2010, Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC) contracted with the Heldrich Center to identify the regional demand for workers who were skilled in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to map GIS career opportunities, and to make recommendations for new types of curricula and credentials to address current or expected future gaps in the supply of skilled workers. Heldrich Center researchers reviewed relevant national and regional reports and Web sites to identify the key industries and occupations associated with GIS work and various levels of GIS skill related to key jobs.

From 2006 to 2007, the Heldrich Center conducted an assessment of the workforce needs of the warehousing and distribution industry in the New York/New Jersey region for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to support their Portfields Initiative. Port Newark/Port Elizabeth is the busiest port complex in the eastern United States and a critical driver of the region's economy.
