The Heldrich Center, in partnership with the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, is conducting a study to understand the workforce composition of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) and to identify best practices in recruiting and retaining females and underrepresented minorities in key professional positions. To do this, the research team is conducting a thorough literature review to identify best practices within and outside of the transportation industry. In addition, researchers are conducting case studies of DOT around the United States with innovative diversity measures in place. In addition, the team is assessing the policies and procedures currently used at NJDOT. Based on findings from these review, the team will develop a customized diversity management plan for the agency designed to improve recruitment, retention, and career advancement for all employees, including those from underrepresented groups.
