Maria Heidkamp and Carl Van Horn recently were invited to participate in the U.S.-EU Roundtable on Addressing Long-term Unemployment, hosted by senior officials of the U.S. Department of Labor, the European Commission, and White House staff. Representatives from the governments of Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom described programs that are being implemented to serve long-term unemployed workers in their countries.
Van Horn spoke at the session titled, “Designing Programs to Reconnect the Long-term Unemployed with the Workforce.” He explored long-term unemployment in New Jersey and the challenges facing job seekers. He provided background about the New Start Career Network, a Heldrich Center initiative that is assisting older long-term unemployed New Jerseyans reconnect to employment. He also discussed how the federal government can help the long-term unemployed.
