In late January, Center Director Carl Van Horn visited with Louisiana State University (LSU) faculty, administrators, employers, and state government leaders to discuss the development and impact of the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development. Dr. Van Horn was invited by Professor Ed Holton of LSU, who is leading a planning effort to develop a university-based center on workforce issues to serve Louisiana and the region.
LSU's main campus in the state capital of Baton Rouge serves 32,000 students with more than 1,300 full-time faculty. The university's interest in creating a new center of excellence in workforce development is driven by concerns about the future of the Louisiana economy and the university's commitment to support the state's economic development.
Dr. Van Horn described the Heldrich Center's research agenda, organizational structure, funding, and partnerships with industry and educators. He also explained how the Center's facilities are used to advance its top priorities, such as raising worker skill levels, improving workforce productivity, returning the unemployed and dislocated to work, and expanding economic opportunities for all job seekers.
